According to figures released by Israel, at least 98 detainees from Palestine have lost their lives during detention starting from October 2023. A human rights group located in Israel has reported that the actual number is probably considerably greater, as a result of hundreds of unaccounted for detainees originating in Gaza.

A detainee detained alongside the individual testified that he was led to the yard by correctional officers just prior to his passing, visibly injured and exposed from the waist down. His corpse has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Further inmates who died in detention in Israel remain anonymous. The prison service and armed services provided researchers with the total of fatalities in custody, and minimal other details such as the location where they lost their lives, but not the detainees’ identities.

Recognition Difficulties

In 21 cases, mainly people from Gaza, investigators could not to connect the few details given by authorities to a death recorded by advocacy bodies, either through statements from freed prisoners or accounts in the media.
