American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to continue performing their duties without pay.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to setbacks caused by climate and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, can I secure an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - among the peak after the closure started.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest shutdown in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland, California.
