Astronaut Discloses Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had emerged from the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
