Correctional Facilities Won't Be Fixed Overnight, Minister Says, while Police Search For Two Individuals Mistakenly Released
Opposition justice spokesperson the shadow minister has described the circumstances as a "complete and utter shambles," commenting earlier today.
Speaking during a broadcast interview, he pointed to remarks made by the justice minister following a recent inmate discharge, stating that the minister would establish stricter verifications.
"There was a delay of six days for the prison service supposedly to even become aware this has happened" and notify the authorities, the shadow official explains, "who are now a week late in the manhunt to locate him."
The opposition figure criticises Lammy's handling during recent parliamentary questions and accuses him of a "total failure in responsibility."
Speaking about incorrect prison releases in broader terms, the spokesperson underlines that "every single accidental release [...] is unforgivable."
He acknowledges there were such releases under the previous administration, but claims the number "has increased dramatically" under Labour.
Advocating additional correctional facilities to be built, he continues: "The public want to see now are proper checks implemented."
"This represents a particular bureaucratic error by the justice department supervised by the minister," the opposition member concludes.
