Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to check the site of where the images were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
