It has been confirmed that original actors Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will reprise their iconic roles in the next chapter of the Hunger Games film series, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The project is now in the works.

An Important Comeback for the Franchise

Lawrence and Hutcherson are returning as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the roles they originated. It is believed their roles will likely occur in a flash-forward sequence, considering the main film series concluded with their characters settled into family life.

This represents the sixth cinematic outing in the global Hunger Games franchise.

Exploring the New Story

Sunrise on the Reaping is based upon a 2025 novel by series creator Suzanne Collins. It will be the second film set before the original story after 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Once again is Francis Lawrence, who has helmed nearly all the previous films in the series.

A New Era in Panem

The film's events are set 24 years before the first Hunger Games, focusing on a young Haymitch Abernathy. Haymitch, who would later become Katniss's mentor, is featured as a tribute in the brutal 50th Hunger Games.

The supporting roles feature several prominent actors in pivotal roles:

• Jesse Plemons steps into the role of Plutarch Heavensbee.
• Ralph Fiennes takes on the part of a earlier incarnation of the calculating President Snow.

What the Stars Are Doing Now & The Film's Schedule

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence stars in the film Die My Love. Josh Hutcherson stars in the sequel to the hit horror film Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

Regarding the filming timeline:

1. Principal photography began in the summer of 2025.
2. Filming reportedly wrapped in November of the same year.
3. The eagerly awaited film is targeting a November 2026 theatrical debut.
