Works I Haven't Finished Enjoying Are Piling Up by My Bed. Is It Possible That's a Good Thing?
It's somewhat uncomfortable to reveal, but let me explain. Five novels sit by my bed, every one partially consumed. Inside my phone, I'm partway through thirty-six audio novels, which seems small alongside the 46 ebooks I've set aside on my digital device. The situation doesn't include the expanding stack of early editions near my living room table, striving for praises, now that I am a established novelist myself.
Starting with Determined Finishing to Intentional Setting Aside
At first glance, these stats might appear to support recent opinions about today's attention spans. A writer commented a short while ago how easy it is to lose a person's focus when it is fragmented by digital platforms and the 24-hour news. They suggested: “It could be as people's focus periods evolve the writing will have to adjust with them.” However as someone who once would stubbornly get through any book I began, I now regard it a personal freedom to put down a novel that I'm not in the mood for.
Our Finite Span and the Wealth of Possibilities
I wouldn't believe that this practice is a result of a short concentration – more accurately it comes from the awareness of existence passing quickly. I've consistently been impressed by the Benedictine maxim: “Keep the end each day in mind.” Another point that we each have a mere finite period on this planet was as sobering to me as to others. And yet at what different point in history have we ever had such immediate availability to so many mind-blowing works of art, at any moment we desire? A wealth of options meets me in each library and behind any digital platform, and I strive to be purposeful about where I focus my energy. Is it possible “DNF-ing” a book (abbreviation in the literary community for Incomplete) be not a mark of a weak mind, but a selective one?
Reading for Understanding and Self-awareness
Notably at a era when the industry (and therefore, acquisition) is still dominated by a specific group and its concerns. Even though engaging with about characters distinct from us can help to build the capacity for understanding, we furthermore read to consider our personal journeys and role in the society. Before the books on the shelves better reflect the backgrounds, realities and issues of prospective individuals, it might be quite challenging to hold their focus.
Modern Writing and Consumer Interest
Of course, some writers are actually effectively crafting for the “contemporary attention span”: the concise style of some modern novels, the focused pieces of different authors, and the short sections of various contemporary stories are all a wonderful showcase for a more concise style and technique. Additionally there is an abundance of writing guidance geared toward capturing a reader: perfect that initial phrase, polish that opening chapter, elevate the drama (further! higher!) and, if crafting mystery, put a mystery on the beginning. Such suggestions is all solid – a potential publisher, editor or audience will spend only a several valuable minutes deciding whether or not to forge ahead. There's no benefit in being difficult, like the individual on a workshop I joined who, when questioned about the plot of their novel, announced that “it all becomes clear about three-fourths of the into the story”. Not a single writer should put their reader through a series of 12 labours in order to be grasped.
Creating to Be Accessible and Granting Space
Yet I do compose to be clear, as to the extent as that is possible. Sometimes that demands holding the reader's hand, steering them through the narrative point by economical step. At other times, I've understood, understanding demands perseverance – and I must grant my own self (as well as other writers) the permission of exploring, of layering, of deviating, until I find something meaningful. A particular writer argues for the novel finding innovative patterns and that, rather than the conventional plot structure, “alternative forms might enable us conceive new approaches to craft our stories dynamic and real, keep making our novels original”.
Transformation of the Story and Current Platforms
In that sense, each viewpoints agree – the novel may have to adapt to accommodate the modern audience, as it has continually done since it began in the historical period (in its current incarnation today). Maybe, like earlier novelists, future writers will go back to publishing incrementally their works in publications. The next such writers may currently be releasing their work, chapter by chapter, on web-based services such as those used by countless of regular visitors. Art forms evolve with the period and we should permit them.
More Than Brief Attention Spans
